James has worked with top executives and their teams at Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit organizations and government agencies including: Alcatel, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Ford Motor Company, Booz Allen Hamilton, HOK, Pacific Bell (now AT&T), Right Management, US EPA, NASA Ames Research Center, US Fish & Wildlife, and Fannie Mae.

He is a popular public speaker, with appearances at the prestigious Shambhala Authentic Leadership Conference, The Conference Board Executive Coaching Conference, the International Enneagram Conference, Wisdom 2.0, and several International Coach Federation Annual Conferences.
James is the founder of New Ventures West, one of the most recognized and well-respected international coach training institutions. He is the author of Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others, which is widely recognized as a seminal text in the field of coach education and is used internationally in universities and coach training institutions. James is currently writing a second book titled Coaching Now.

James is a Master Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation. At UCSC, he studied literature and psychology and, later, at SFSU, biology. He apprenticed with Dr. Fernando Flores and received the equivalent of 10 years of philosophical training.
