Allan Henderson

Professional Experience
Allan is Chief Development Officer of the firm. He has been consulting organizations—large and small, public and private, charitable and profit-making—on four continents for 26 years. He works especially in extended engagements helping leadership and management to focus on long-term concerns and to implement transformational change in their organizations. He is a renowned thought leader and practitioner in leadership and organizational transformation.

Allan is especially proud of and grateful for the opportunities he has had to consult within the UN system. The largest and most challenging of these efforts to date was his work co-designing and facilitating the Leadership Development Programs of UNDP’s HIV/AIDS Group. Over a decade, he conducted programs ranging in length from seven months to five years in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Gambia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Ukraine and Vietnam. These programs unleashed the commitment and fuelled the actions of thousands of change leaders, and provided a platform for developing hundreds of South-based facilitator-coaches.

His work in the for-profit sector (with such companies as Bechtel, BP, Fluor, Lafarge, Motorola, Nemak and Shell) and government (notably the U.S. Department of Energy) has focused on: Organizational transformation; Cultural integration during mergers; Set-up for large-capital projects; Leading in multi-cultural environments; Conflict resolution; and Succession planning.

Allan serves as Vice Chair of Pinchot University (graduate school that was the first to offer an MBA in sustainability) and Chairman of the Board of The Democracy Collaborative (a Washington, DC-based think tank). He is also principal and co-founder of GHJ Consulting, a small, international management consultancy incorporated in Seattle, USA.

A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Allan devoted his previous career to working for an NGO addressing hunger and development issues. He combines the knowledge and perspective gained in those endeavors with direct, personal experience in founding and running for-profit enterprises in the U.S. and Asia, to bring both philosophical and practical depth to consultation, coaching and organizational development.
